Ectool is an utility to help with the management of playing
correspondence or email chess.
After several years away from chess because of work, I took up
the game again thanks to the internet. Email chess is one of
the most gratifying forms of the game, allowing you to meet
players from all over the world. It is reasonably quick and it
doesn' t take place in a club away from home.
The following are some of the most important features of the
program:
Keep a database of games in progress and already completed,
displaying the games in tabular form and showing them in a
graphical Bookup (tm) style chess board. The game list show a
flag regarding in which game is your turn to play
Automatic creation of messages, in the various formats usually
used in correspondence chess, in PGN format, in a simple text
format, numeric (the official format of the ICCF - The
International Correspondence Chess Federation), with the
option of editing the message created, adding text and a
signature, carbon copies etc.
Game file transfer feature. This feature allows to play
against another ECTool user receiving the game file attached
to the email messages. The receiver can open, modify, replace
or save the game. It has been changed in 5.0 version
Send the resulting messages via SMTP protocol, the most
widespread of the internet protocols used for sending mail
(REMEMBER that AOL doesn't support POP3 and SMTP protocols,
then AOL users will not be able to send or receive mail within
ECTool ) from the program itself without the necessity of
installing MAPI or any other external program. Anyway, Pegasus
(tm) users, will be able to send their mail trough this
powerful email client easily.
Receive messages through POP3 protocol, the most widely used
of the internet email protocols. User can make selective
download, leaving not chess related messages on server.
Keep track of messages sent and received, with a single (and
secure) message database.
Import/export games to and from PGN format. It also allows the
updating of games being played from games received in email
messages and pasted to the clipboard.
Analyze games and positions using specials REBEL engines for
ECTool. Also the program can use Crafty chess program for
analysis.
