Welcome to the world of Heraldry. BLAZONS! is an attempt to bring
the ancient art of heraldry into the modern day world of computers.
The purpose of this program is to be able to interpret and draw a
coat-of-arms from a typed in description. A worded description of
a coat-of-arms is known as a blazon, hence the name of the program.
To the best of my knowledge, this program is totally unique, in
that it interprets the blazon instead of showing a pre-drawn
picture indexed by family name. This also allows you to make up
your own coat-of-arms.
Please keep in mind that although the program comes with a
database of about 1400 names and blazons, it is NOT meant as a
'look up my coat of arms' type program.
In the course of genealogy research, one often comes across a
blazon such as: "Azure a fess argent in chief three mullets of the
second". Now that may sound impressive, but what is it supposed to
look like? With a little more research, you might find a nice
black and white picture and try to imagine what the colors are from
the different line styles. If you have a little extra money, you
can take the blazon to a heraldic artist and have a color picture
professionally prepared.
With BLAZONS!, just type in the family name and the blazon,
and the program will draw the coat-of-arms, which you can even
print in color, or save it to be imported into some other graphics
program.
Before getting into how to use the program, I should explain
some of its limitations. Unfortunately it cannot handle all
possible blazons. There are just too many complex descriptions to
be able to interpret them all. I estimate that it can handle about
seventy percent of blazons for family names. Any coat that has
something taking action, such as holding an object, will not be
drawn properly.
Although the program comes with about 800 pictures, there are
many more beasts, birds and things that I do not have a picture
for. If the program does not find a picture, it will draw a
question mark in the color and location where the picture would be
drawn. Keep in mind that this is not supposed to be great heraldic
art, but a way for more people to be able to envision a
coat-of-arms and help foster an appreciation for the art of
heraldry.
