London-based Tunic Software has released software to help people with
hand tremor control their computer mouse. Called 'MouseCage', the new
software is intended for those with Parkinson's Disease; Essential
Tremor and other conditions that may cause shaky hands.
The MouseCage project - led by British astrophysicist Nick Allen and
Dutch software developer Nico Cuppen û is a software-only solution
that has solved the mouse control problem in a radically different way
to existing hardware solutions.
MouseCage features a dual-cursor. A guide cursor provides visual
feedback by showing the user's actual hand movements, while the normal
Windows cursor takes an average of these movements and predicts where
the user intends to click.
Another feature of MouseCage is its 'cage' key. When users are near
their intended position for clicking, they can 'cage' their mouse by
pressing this user-definable key on their keyboard or mouse. When
caging is activated, overall mouse movement is reduced to allow fine
control. If the cage key is pressed a second time, cursor movement
stops altogether so that users can click in their own time.
To deal with intermittent tremor cases, a tremor-detection feature
switches the computer between normal operation and MouseCage driven
operation depending on the operator's pattern of hand movements.
The new software has already received the support of the British
National Tremor Foundation and the USAÆs Tremor Action Network.
