█ PinPoint itself is not a "program". It is an ActiveX component -- an █
█ engine that can be manipulated in virtually limitless ways. PinPoint █
█ does, however, come with an open-source program, Visual PinPoint, █
█ that provides hands-off astrometry, plus automated asteroid and █
█ supernova hunting. The PinPoint engine can be used by scripts written █
█ in JavaScript/JScript, VBScript, Perl, and Python. It can also be █
█ used from Excel macros, Visual Basic applications and any other █
█ Automation-capable programs. Visual PinPoint is written in Visual █
█ Basic, and is provided with complete source code. Taken as a whole, █
█ the PinPoint package provides a complete toolkit for the modern █
█ scientific amateur and educational observatory. █

█ PinPoint Engine Features █
█ █
█ Visual PinPoint provides Windows access to all of these features. █
█ █
█ - Sensitive detection of star-like objects in any FITS image. The █
█ process used for detection does not rely on "clean" images. It can █
█ operate at nearly peak sensitivity on raw CCD images that have not █
█ been dark-subtracted or flat-fielded. █
█ █
█ - Lookup of stars from a variety of catalogs (GSC, USNO-SA2.0, █
█ USNO-ACT, Bill Gray's GSC-ACT hybrid, and Tycho-2). Includes the █
█ GSC and ACT catalogs on the CD-ROM. █
█ █
█ - Automatic plate-solution - matching of image vs catalog stars and █
█ computing the transformation between plate X-Y coordinates and █
█ J2000 equatorial coordinates of all objects in the image. █
█ █
█ - Plate solution uses up to 5th order fit, depending on the number of █
█ available matching stars. All classic AIPS orthographic projections █
█ are supported as well, and final fit uses the specified projection █
█ type. Thus PinPoint may be used for wide field applications such as █
█ Schmidt camera and radio astronomy images. █
█ █
█ - Adds World Coordinate System coefficients to the FITS header, █
█ making the image self-scaling in any WCS-aware application. This █
█ also allows use of the image for astrometric purposes at later █
█ times without re-matching to a catalog and re-solving the plate. █
█ █
█ - Supports attaching POSS/DSS images, and understands the special WCS █
█ transforms contained in their FITS headers. This makes it possible █
█ to use POSS images for supernova hunting and measuring positions in █
█ historical images. █
█ █
█ - Produces enumerable collections containing lists of the detected █
█ objects in the image and the catalog stars used in plate solution. █
█ These lists contain objects whose properties include RA and Dec █
█ (J2000), X-Y position, magnitudes, etc. A method is provided for █
█ generating an MPC record for selected objects. █
█ █
█ - Provides V-band differential photometry, using the catalog stars as █
█ photometric references. Note: Catalog stars are not generally "high █
█ quality" photometric references, therefore photometric values given █
█ by PinPoint are approximate. See next item. █
█ █
█ - Performs circular aperture photometry on all detected objects in █
█ the image. The resulting flux measurements are very high quality, █
█ permitting PinPoint to be used in professional-class photometry █
█ systems. Aperture and annulus sizes (in arc seconds) are █
█ user-settable properties. Center-slicing is used, minimizing the █
█ effects of in-annulus objects. █
█ █
█ - Has a Windows device-independent bitmap (DIB) object which you can █
█ use to display and filter images attached to PinPoint. The Visual █
█ PinPoint source code shows how to build sophisticated graphical █
█ applications using PinPoint. █

█ - Includes sample scripts that can be easily customized by █
█ non-programmers, and which perform the basic operations of mass █
█ plate-solving, asteroid detection, measurement and MPC reporting, █
█ supernova detection, etc. █
