PSRemote allows Canon PowerShot digital cameras to be operated tethered
to a PC using a USB cable. Virtually all of the camera's settings can
be controlled from the PC (the degree of control depends on the camera
model). PSRemote is able to control the exposure mode, ISO, shutter
speed, aperture and lens zoom setting of most PowerShot cameras. Some
camera models also support a live viewfinder display.
The USB cable may be up to 5m (16 feet) long. One or more USB hubs can
be used to extend the distance e.g. PSRemote has been tested using two
5m cables connected to USB hubs and a 4m cable connected to the camera
giving a total length of 14m (approx 46 feet). There are commercially
available USB extenders which can be used if the camera needs to be
further from the computer.
It is advisable to use a mains DC adaptor when using PSRemote for
extended periods or when using the time lapse features. If the camera
is located a long way from the PC or is not easily accessible it is
essential that there is a way of turning the power to the camera on and
off. Then if there is a communication failure between the camera and PC
it is possible to turn everything off and to start again.
