If cohesive layers are loaded faster than they can
release their porewater, excess porewater pressures
result, which are only gradually dissipated. This
process is known as consolidation.
Settlement modelling according to the guidelines of the
DIN 4019 does not consider the fact that settlement is
often almost complete by the end of the construction
phase. For most buildings, 80 % of loads are already
present when the shell is complete. Settlement, and thus
differential settlement, is generally non-critical at
this time, as it is manifested in masonry joints, which
are then covered by pointing and paintwork in the
"post-shell" phase. For cohesive soils in particular
therefore, a temporal estimate of settlement
development, even for "simple" buildings, is an absolute
prerequisite for safe assessment of possibly damaging
differential settlement. The GGU-Consolidate program can
be of great assistance here.
The GGU-Consolidation program system allows modelling of
one-dimensional consolidation processes in systems of
one or more layers. The initial porewater pressure at
time t = 0 can be defined as wished. With this program
you can also generate porewater pressure distribution
resulting from a foundation load. The drainage
conditions at the upper and lower layer boundaries can
be separately specified. Furthermore, system loading can
be time-dependent. The program is an improvement of an
older GGU program (no longer available), which could
only deal with one-layered systems. Data sets which were
created with the older program (KONMULTI) can be read.
Besides the capabilities of the older program, which was
limited to analytically derived solutions of the
consolidation theory developed by Terzaghi, the
GGU-Consolidation program can also numerically model
multi-layer systems. As well as classical consolidation
theory, systems which are equipped with vertical
drainage can be investigated.
